Mommy + Me Dresses

The Details

My Dress {c/o- wearing size small, runs a little big, could have sized down} | Maxi’s Dress {3T, runs a little big} | table and chairs: Restoration Hardware Child

Is there anything sweeter than mommy and me matching? My friend, Destiny, just launched this collaboration with Ivy City Co. to create the Destiny Dress and the Mini Destiny Dress! These are comfortable, flexible in sizing {you can’t go wrong if you go up or down a size}, and I can easily nurse in it with the stretchy top section. I’m wearing the size small and Maxi is in the 3T. Maxi even requested to sleep in her dress Tuesday, so I’d say it’s “toddler approved.” haha.

Speaking of dresses, let’s talk about the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and updates. I didn’t even intend on addressing the sale updates because honestly, it feels weird to this year. Do I love the distractions blogs provide in 2020? YES. I’ve found while nursing Harry and scrolling my phone I *have* to stay off Facebook or I go down a rabbit hole of people’s opinions on everything from school restarting to playdates and it’s a lot mentally. I’m a firm believer we aren’t meant to absorb THAT much virtual chatter. It can be too much at times. So while I do keep scripture cards and a book on Harry’s side table, I find that I also get so much joy from scrolling blogs during that quiet time. I want to see that paint project you’ve been working on, or what toys your kids are loving, and what sneakers you’ve found that are perfect for walks with your family. And yes, I even want to see the sales. Are they always practical right now? No. Will we wear new boots this fall? I honestly don’t know the answer to that. But there are things my kids need as they grow and a few things I need as my body is postpartum, so I enjoy seeing what people find.

I’m rambling, but I went back and forth with updating on the sale or even covering the sale. However, after many e-mails and DMs from readers requesting an update, I want to chat about what you all want to see and what I enjoy seeing. With COVID-19, the sale has been pushed back a few weeks- understandably! And the shopping dates will be a little different. I honestly *hope* this new system allows it to feel like less of a mad dash. If you remember, you shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in “tiers” based on how much you shop with your Nordstrom Card. If you go to your Nordstrom Account, you’ll see what cardholder level you are and that determines when you shop the sale. Let me break down the changes for you, so you can get an overarching idea of how this sale will work this year.

  • Everyone can preview items on July 24th! I actually really like this concept, because you can take time to determine and assess what your family needs based on their sizing, closets, and the preview. Then, you can budget and get an idea of what you will be spending.
  • There will be less inventory this year. Nordstrom shared that and I’m sure it is due to a mix of COVID-19 and people just not being in store. While I will always say “more is more” in terms of hosting, accessories, and chocolate, I do appreciate that there will be less inventory this year. I believe they are sticking to the top-selling staples we really want and it won’t feel overwhelming.
  • The dates are spread out a bit based on tiers, I’ll share them below.

I’ll have blog posts spread throughout each tier’s access. And don’t stress out if your favorites sell out during Icon Early Access. There WILL be returns.

But the main reason I wanted to chat about the sale dates is I want to know what do YOU want to see? I looked at last year’s top sellers and blog post. The top items you all loved:

  1. Neutral SweatersThis sweater shown above was the #1 seller of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It sold out, but is now back in stock.
  2. Barefoot Dreams Blanket– This is probably the most used item in our home and both of my kids LOVE them. Harry is currently wrapped up in one snuggling in my lap as I type this. Maxi has to sleep with her’s each and every night.
  3. Adidas Sneakers– Who doesn’t need a good pair of black sneakers?
  4. Alo High Waist Moto Leggings– My favorite leggings are those that provide great compression. I wear these in a size small and they are super smoothing in case you have cropped workout tops.
  5. Ugg Slippers– I’m typing this post wearing these right now, so I can attest they were well worth it! 😉

For the sale this year, I’ll be shopping for things for Harry, shoes for Maxi, and postpartum items for me. But what are YOU shopping for? Are you shopping it? Will you skim the sale or skip it? It’s different this year, so I want to structure my content around your needs. I don’t think my reviews this year will have as *many* items as say my lookbooks in the past, but I do want them to be thorough. I also won’t be going in store to shop, so that will also be a factor in coverage.

Let me know your thoughts! And if you don’t read blog posts for sales, don’t worry! Most of my content the next month is related to room reveals, which happens to be my favorite thing to post. 🙂

Have a wonderful rest of your week!

I live in the deep South so while i may get 1 fall item, I am usually picking up staples like Neulash. I do also buy ahead(especially shoes) for my son. So I do like the posts, but I agree that this year, I probably wont be shopping very much for on trend items. That said, I look forward to whatever content you share!

I love your NSale approach this year! I’m not planning to buy much this year because I’m on a more limited budget with having to get a new vehicle last month, but I am needed a few things for fall (especially sweaters) so I’m excited to still see what’s there!

YES! Post on the sale! I totally forgot about it and am all about the break and return to ‘normal.’ I’ve been wearing the same postpartum/nursing things for a few months and with 7 months left of nursing need something to spruce up my wardrobe.

    Hi Katey!
You and Maxi are darling together! What are your other go to places for Mommy & Me dresses? Do you have any recommendations for outfits that coordinate, but aren’t necessarily matching?

For the Anniversary Sale, I’d love to see a “winter capsule wardrobe.” i.e. the top 5 things to add to your closet for this winter? As you said, many people are likely scaling back this year, but I still want a few (fun) updates!

    Thanks so much!

      Hi Meg!

      Aw thank you so much!

I love Lily Pulitzer for matching outfits and they should be having a big sale in September! Lila + Hayes has matching mommy & me pajamas and then Smocked Auctions has matching mommy + me pajamas and tops. So does Roller Rabbit! For more coordinating, Rachel Parcell on Nordstrom has mommy & me dresses that aren’t too matchy. Gal Meets Glam also has matching dresses, but I do know she is stopping her business soon.

      xx,

I totally agree with you! Reading your blog and looking at your IG its something that I look forward to during this no so perfect times.

I don’t think I will be shopping for any dresses or anything too fancy this year since most events have been cancel or postpone. But I would love to see some casual outfits, I’m thinking cute sweater, jeans, comfy shoes/ booties. Something to get me out of my leggings!! lol!

    Xo,

I am glad you’re covering the sale again this year! I always check your blog first as I value your opinion in fashion and know you only share things that you yourself have test and love. I appreciate that you’re being sensitive to the times and acknowledging that that though buying fall sweaters is fun it is also also frivolous during the times we are in in. I will be shopping for baby items for our baby on the way, I want to finally snag a Barefoot Dreams blanket and am hoping/wondering if the GLOPRO will be on sale?! Thanks for always being sensitive and so caring to your readers.

Last year, I shopped in July and by the end of the summer, some items were on deeper sale and I hadn’t even worn them yet! I think I lost the confidence that Anniversary Sale is THE best time to buy, or the ONLY time to buy, especially with the insane sales Nordstrom did at the start of Covid. That said, I always look forward to great prices on Zella leggings in fun prints. I’ll be on the lookout for mostly activewear, maybe a beauty deal or two.

I’ll be (very) new postpartum when the sale goes on so I’m looking for loose-fitting shirts and tunics and sweaters. Free People seems to have some tunics on sale during this event, I think, and those are nice and lightweight for a TX fall. If those adidas are back on sale I’m buying a pair!!
