Dear Katey, Vol. III

Hello, friends! Thank you SO much for all your heartfelt words about the COF rebrand yesterday! I read each comment over a cup of coffee and felt so much love from you all. I’m sending you all a major hug today. Here we have another issue of Dear Katey and I hope you love it!

FASHION

Hi Katey! What do you recommend to wear to a summer wedding? I love florals and light dresses, but I don’t want to look like I’m going to a bridal shower.
Katey: Oh girl, I’m so with you on being torn about summer wedding dresses. If it is a day-wedding or before 6 pm, you can definitely get away with a lighter, more floral number. Past 6, I usually say to opt for cocktail attire! I recently picked up this Alice & Olivia number {dress pictured} for a dressier wedding. Be sure to size up as this is more fitted. I’m typically a 0 in Alice & Olivia and went with a 4 here. I also love this, this and this for summer wedding dress options. I’ll share some picks below, too.

WELLNESS

Hi Katey! Do you still store your essential oils on an acrylic stand? I know if I don’t see them, I don’t use them. However, I don’t like them all cluttered on my kitchen counter. What’s your trick?

Katey: I have really started to use my oils a lot more now that she is a toddler. When she was a baby, I really only used lavender or Gentle Baby with her, so I didn’t need to move them around much- hence the stand being such a gem! However, now that I use them for all her little cuts, bruises or pains, I like to be able to move them around the house. I use this case by Truffle and LOVE that the top is clear so I can see what is in it. It will fit another 2 layers of oils as pictured {they can be stacked on top of one another} so it fits plenty for me. I just carry this pouch around the house and find it’s so much less cluttered.

SALES

Hi Katey! The NSale is coming soon, right?! How do you prep for this and what should I be thinking a month before? Any tricks?

Katey: You are on it, girl! The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is coming soon and you won’t want to miss this. It’s a sale where new-to-fall items will have prices slashed, as opposed to seasonal leftovers trying to be cleared out.

Here are a Few Things to Keep in Mind:

  1. Nordstrom cardmembers can shop the sale starting Thursday, July 12th. They have early access until Thursday, July 19th. Public access to the sale starts Friday, July 20th and ends August 5th. A lot of times people ask if items will be restocked before public access, there isn’t a firm answer on that. Some pieces are restocked, but some items {typically designer bags, etc.} are first come, first serve.
  2. To gain early access as a Nordstrom cardmember, you need to apply by July 8th. Nordstrom offers two types of cards: the retail credit card or a Visa Signature Card. Both give Nordstrom benefits, but the Visa Signature Card gives you extra Nordstrom points for purchases you make outside of Nordstrom.
  3. Where to shop? Head to COF bright and early on July 12th as I’ll be posting content as the sale goes live. I’ll get to shop the sale prior, so I can give you sizing and fit information to help you make your purchasing decisions! I typically have some fun giveaways as well- hint hint! 😉
  4. Want items day of? Add your picks to your Nordstrom cart online, then choose “In-Store Pickup” for shipping. Nordstrom texts you when your order is ready and you can go to the store when you want! I know our store even offers curbside pickup! Nordstrom also offers free shipping if this isn’t your thing!

How to Decide What to Buy:

  • Take these next few weeks to look over your budget. This is the sale we allocate the most of our clothing budget towards each year, so I’ll take the next few weeks and really narrow down how much I’ll spend on each family member.
  • In order to see which family member needs what, I clean out closets! We cleaned Maxi’s about two weeks ago and this weekend I’ll tackle Paul’s. Next week I’ll look at my closet. Shoes and outerwear are probably the biggest things I buy for myself and I get Paul a lot of workwear during this sale.
  • Don’t stress, I’ll be covering this sale a lot! I know many readers are looking for different pieces at different price points, so over the course of those weeks, there will be a lot of Nordstrom Anniversary Sale content so you can peruse which post fits your needs best.

HAIR

Hi girl! I’m asking you this question because as a Texan you probably know the best of anyone. I need some summer hair help for a climate with mild heat but pretty serious humidity. I’m wondering what the best products, tools, and techniques are to keep my hair from turning into a fluffy frizzy mess the moment I walk outside (think Monica from Friends on the island vacation episodes.) I know that moisture is important for hair so it doesn’t seek the moisture in the air, but is there something else I’m missing?! I haven’t had ANY success and hate to always resort to a ponytail!

Katey: Story of my life, girlfriend! I love heat. Can’t stand humidity. I probably live in the wrong state! ha. Your hair needs moisture to repel humidity, and while I can’t say products are foolproof, here is what I think helps the most!

  1. I recently purchased the Living Proof Frizz Line that combats humidity. I’m blown away by it! I’ve tried the shampoo, conditioner, and the humidity shield.
  2. If you want to rock straight locks, use this Bumble & Bumble product that helps fight humidity in straight hair for 3 days.
  3. When in doubt, the Fekkai Keratin Treatment {they have their own that is not damaging and different than any keratin treatment I’ve tried!} is worth every penny. Now, just know it is extremely pricey. I’ve only used it once before I had a lot of travel coming up and because of the price, I haven’t justified it again. It lasts around 12 weeks, sometimes more. However, if you have your honeymoon coming up or a big trip and you don’t want to mess with your hair it’s great. It also helps strengthen your hair!

As always, feel free to send your Ask Katey questions! 🙂 Thank you so much for reading!

Hi Katey, I love your blog but I wanted to ask you to please reconsider your support of Young Living. The founder, Gary Young, held his infant daughter underwater during a water birth until she died and was arrested three times for practicing medicine without a license. The FDA has also requested that the company stop making false medical healing claims. And in 2015, 8 Young Living supplements were found to have extremely high levels of lead. There are several much more ethical and reputable companies one can buy essential oils from.
